What Causes Air Conditioner Compressors to Fail?

What Causes Air Conditioner Compressors to Fail?

Few things are more inconvenient than your air conditioner not working. Many issues can cause the air conditioner to not work, some of which are significant. The compressor in the air conditioner is a crucial part of the system.

When the compressor fails, not only will your home become uncomfortable, but you can also expect a pretty expensive repair bill. Fortunately, compressor failure is preventable - if you maintain the system on a routine basis with a licensed HVAC technician. The following are some problems that lead to system failure that you can prevent with regular servicing.

         The Coils Are Dirty

Over time, dust, oil, and other contaminates can build on the coils of the condenser. When this occurs, the air conditioner will not get rid the heat generated by the system. The air conditioner will then cycle continuously in an attempt to cool your room. This causes increased pressure from the high temperatures in the coils will cause them to overheat and ultimately fail.

         The Suction Lines Are Blocked

The refrigerant lines can become blocked and damaged over time. This causes the system to not cool the home as efficiently as it should. When the problem persists, the temperature and pressure on the lines will increase and cause the compressor to overheat and fail.

         The Refrigerant Levels Are Low

Your air conditioner's refrigerant lines could become damaged for any number of reasons, which will cause the refrigerant to leak. Over time, the refrigerant levels will get too low and cause the compressor to work significantly harder to get enough refrigerant through the unit. The compressor will eventually become too strained and cause failure of the entire system.

If refrigerant leaks occur, you need to have them repaired right away. Not only will your home not cool, but toxic refrigerant will leak into the environment and through your system.

The Suction Line Size Is Not Right

If the suction line starts to leak, you need a licensed HVAC technician to do the repair. If someone who is inexperienced attempts to replace the line and places one which is incorrectly sized, the compressor will ultimately fail prematurely.

         There Are Electrical Issues

An electrical issue can cause a buildup of acid in the system, which causes a problem for many parts of the system, including the compressor. When you have a technician service your unit, they notice acid, which means the electrical components of the entire system is damaged and could cause a system-wide failure. The technician may recommend replacing the unit instead of repairing it.

This issue emphasizes the importance of routine HVAC maintenance. Your system should have annual inspections to ensure the wiring, fuses, and other components of the system are in good repair.

         The System Is Contaminated

Contaminates can also cause compressor failure. Contaminates include dirt, leaves, moisture, acid, and even bird droppings. When the contaminates build up, the components of the entire system have to work too hard to create the necessary air flow required to adequately work.

         The Oil Lubricant Is Low

The oil lubricant is the lifeblood of the air conditioner, and compressor problems occur when the level gets too low. The system will not work otherwise. When you have a professional inspection, the HVAC technician will check the oil lubricant levels to ensure they are correct.

When your compressor is in optimal shape, you can trust your air conditioner will work efficiently. This is why your HVAC system needs regular maintenance at least one time a year. Our knowledgeable and experienced technicians at

3 Questions to Ask Before Repairing or Replacing Beverage Coolers

How are your retail beverage coolers doing? If you need repairs or need to replace your coolers, how will you know which is the best choice? Here are three questions to help you decide on a plan for your retail beverage displays.

          1. Is the Problem Easily Fixed?

Refrigerated appliances fail or underperform for many reasons. Some of the problems you may experience with a retail beverage cooler can be easily diagnosed and fixed.

A common problem in a refrigerated system is excessive temperatures in the discharge area of the compressor. Temperatures over 275 to 300 degrees Fahrenheit begin to break down the lubricants in mechanical parts and will eventually damage the appliance.

High compressor temperatures can be caused by:

             Restricted filters on suction lines

             Inadequate refrigerant supply

             Excessive superheat from the evaporator

             Non-condensable gas in the system

Your commercial refrigeration specialist can evaluate your beverage display cooler - which includes a temperature survey - to determine whether your appliance is worth repairing. In many cases, an older beverage cooler that has sentimental value can be saved with the right new parts.

          2. What Kind of Refrigerant Does the Cooler Need?

Has it been a while since you've needed refrigerant charges for your beverage coolers? You should know that old-school refrigerants are considered damaging to human health. Harmful refrigerants are slowly being phased out of use, and some may soon be completely unavailable.

Refrigerants that are considered to be ozone-depleting include:

             (CFC)-12 - chlorofluorocarbon

            (HCFC)-22 - hydrochlorofluorocarbon

            R-502

New, alternative blends and materials are being developed to meet increasing demands for refrigerated appliances. Food service equipment is included in the refrigerant-development planning. Research is ongoing to develop safe and reliable alternative refrigerants for all types of commercial refrigeration equipment, including beverage displays.

As you plan for future refrigerant needs, know the type of appliance you're using or plan to use in the future. You need to consider the three categories of appliances when anticipating refrigerant needs.

The three types of cooling equipment you may use are:

          1. Stand-along cases and coolers

          2. Remote-condensing systems

          3. Multi-plex racks (grocery store coolers)

Each one of these systems leaks at some point. Each type of system requires a set number of refrigerant charges to perform as desired. Factor all of these variables into any decision to upgrade or retain beverage coolers.

Some EPA-approved refrigerants for food service uses include:

            R-290 - propane

            R-744, CO2 - carbon dioxide

            R-717 - ammonia

Your commercial-refrigeration-repair service can advise you on current supplies and availability of acceptable refrigerants. Be aware that laws about refrigerants can change in the future. Choose replacement beverage coolers that can be retrofitted or that use relatively available and abundant refrigerant materials.

          3. Do You Have the Power?

Your old beverage coolers may work fine with the electrical system in your store or deli. But what happens if you order a deluxe remote-condensing system with the compressor up on the roof? Can your facility's existing wiring manage the load of all the new equipment?

Before planning for expanded refrigeration in your food-service business, do your research. Ask your refrigeration-repair professionals to advise you about your electrical system's compatibility with a new walk-in or beverage cooler. In some cases, you'll need to upgrade your structure's wiring first.

The good news is that new, high-performance refrigeration systems run more efficiently than older beverage coolers. This bonus can make the investment in power upgrades worth the trouble. Night covers, strip curtains, and smart defrost sensors can lower refrigeration costs even more.

Schedule routine condenser-cleaning and inspections of to keep your coolers running at peak efficiency. Better performance means more energy savings, no matter how old your beverage coolers are.

HVAC Inefficiency Caused by Compressor Oil in the Expansion Valve

All commercial air conditioning systems contain a component known by the general name of a metering device. Thermostatic expansion valves are the most common type of metering device. These valves reduce the pressure of the refrigerant as it enters your evaporator coil. This sudden pressure drop lowers the refrigerant temperature drastically, allowing it to absorb more heat.

Expansion valves work by means of restriction. Yet if the amount of restriction grows too great, insufficient amount of refrigerant will enter the evaporator coil. As a result, the efficiency of your system plunges, leading to overworked compressors and an increase in your cost of cooling. Other mechanical problems may also stem from a serious restriction.

As the owner of a commercial property, you should possess at least a basic understanding of thermostatic expansion valve restrictions. This article provides vital information about one of the most common causes of a restricted expansion valve: compressor oil. By increasing your knowledge of this issue, you can better protect your system against inefficiencies and breakdowns.

           Oil-Logged Expansion Valve Causes

Oil buildup in the expansion valve may occur in one of two main ways. First, it may stem from an excessive amount of compressor oil in the system. This problem often occurs when refilling a compressor's oil reservoir to make up for the oil loss that affects a system over time. Adding too much oil means that an excessive amount of oil will migrate through the system along with the refrigerant.

As this oil gets to the expansion valve, it often backs up or forms deposits, leading to restrictions. Such restrictions may occur even if oil levels don't exceed the maximum recommendation. In that case, the problem may stem from the phenomenon known as refrigerant flooding.

Flooding happens when liquid refrigerant manages to get inside of the compressor while it is running. There, the liquid refrigerant mixes with the oil, causing the two to join together in a frothy mixture. As this mixture flows into the compressor and then through the system, it leads to abnormal amounts of oil entering the expansion valve.

Your commercial refrigeration specialist can evaluate your beverage display cooler - which includes a temperature survey - to determine whether your appliance is worth repairing. In many cases, an older beverage cooler that has sentimental value can be saved with the right new parts.

           Oil-Logged Expansion Valve Effects

Oil-logging negatively affects your expansion valve in two main ways. First of all, it restricts the amount of refrigerant that can pass through at any given time. Simply put, the oil deposits coat the walls of the valve's tailpipe and tubing, thus reducing its interior dimensions. As a result, the volume of refrigerant that can pass through the valve decreases.

Oil-logging also creates problems for the expansion valve's thermal bulb. Located in the expansion valve's tailpipe, the thermal bulb registers the temperature inside of the evaporator coil. If the temperature grows too high, the bulb causes the expansion valve to open, allowing additional refrigerant into the evaporator coil.

As oil coats the inside of the tube, as well as the thermal bulb itself, the bulb has a harder time registering the true temperature. The coating of oil tends to insulate the tube, leading the bulb to register a higher-than-actual temperature. As a result, the bulb opens up the expansion valve prematurely, allowing excessive amounts of refrigerant into the coil.

As the refrigerant volume in the evaporator coil increases, the superheat of the exiting refrigerant decreases. This makes the refrigerant much more likely to turn back into a liquid on its way to the compressor, in turn leading to the refrigerant flooding discussed above. This flooding only exacerbates the oil-logging problem in the expansion valve.

Expansion valve restrictions ultimately cause your HVAC system's efficiency to plummet, driving up your cooling costs in the process. For optimal, cost-effective cooling, refrigerant flow through the expansion valve must remain unimpeded.

3 Preventable Air Conditioner Problems

Air conditioner problems are often preventable with routine care. Nothing's worse on a hot day than a broken air conditioner that would still work if it had proper maintenance. This guide lists three common reasons air conditioners need to have repairs and how you might prevent the problems.

            1. Ice on the Air Conditioner

It's an odd sight when ice covers an air conditioner on a hot day, but it is a common problem. Ice can form due to trouble with the refrigerant, airflow blockage, or mechanical failures.

One of the main preventable reasons for an iced air conditioner is a clogged filter. When dust cakes the filter, air can't flow through it, which leads to ice formation that can spread over the entire unit. Other things can cause restricted airflow too, such as blocked ducts, clogged vents, and a dirty evaporator coil.

Prevent this ice problem by changing the filter according to the manufacturer's recommendation. However, if your AC runs constantly during the summer, you may want to at least check the filter monthly and change it more often if it needs it. Also, clean the register vents and make sure nothing obstructs the flow of air around the HVAC.

While you can't service the mechanical and electrical parts of the AC, you can make sure it receives preventative maintenance from a technician on schedule. Have your air conditioner serviced in the spring so it is cleaned, checked, repaired, and in top condition for the summer.

Having regular service calls and changing the filter on a schedule are the two most important things you can do to prevent an ice problem with your AC.

Your commercial refrigeration specialist can evaluate your beverage display cooler - which includes a temperature survey - to determine whether your appliance is worth repairing. In many cases, an older beverage cooler that has sentimental value can be saved with the right new parts.

            2. Overflowing Drain Pan

An overflowing drain pan is a problem because the water damages your floor if it goes on long enough. Your AC drains condensation outside through a tube. Sometimes, the tube clogs and water accumulates in the drain pan. If the water accumulates faster than the line drains, then the water overflows the pan.

It's a good practice to check the drain pan when you change the filter in your air conditioner. This allows you to catch problems early before water damage occurs. If you see water in the pan, then check the drain line. If there's a clog, it might come out if you use a wet vac to create suction on the line.

You could also try breaking up the clog or forcing it through the line. If the problem happens frequently, then adjust the drain so it has the right slope. If you can't clear the clog or if it needs to be repositioned so it drains properly, then call for an HVAC technician's help.

            3. Blocked Condenser

Weeds, grass, and tree branches grow fast in the summer. It doesn't take long for the area around your AC condenser to become overgrown. This creates a dangerous situation because the condenser needs adequate air circulation to work efficiently.

If the condenser can't pull in enough air, it struggles to operate and that increases your energy bill and lowers the life of your HVAC. It's easy to keep the condenser from being blocked by trimming grass around the unit regularly and cutting back branches and other plants that get too close.

Don't place anything on the condenser because that cuts off air to the unit. If you damage the tiny fins on the side and they flatten out, then buy a fin comb at a hardware store and return the fins to their normal position so air flows around them freely.

Doing your part to maintain your

our new wine cellar is finished and you're ready to fill it with your favorite vintages. If you've never stored a large wine collection in a wine cellar, you might not realize that a few simple mistakes could have a major impact on the taste and value of your bottles.

Here are a few simple dos and don'ts to help you ensure your wine is correctly stored inside your new wine cellar.

Do Store Your Wine on Its Side

One the most common mistakes wine lovers make is storing their wine upright. You might think it’s more convenient to store wine this way, and you can typically store more wine in this fashion. However, storing your wine this way is detrimental to wine's flavor and consistency.

The main reason to keep your wine stored on its side is the cork. When you store wine upright, the cork eventually dries out. This will cause air to seep into the bottle and speed up oxidation. If you store wine on its side, it keeps the cork moist, which protects the integrity of the wine.

Even if the cork on your wine bottle is constructed from glass or plastic, storing the bottle on its side is still the best option.

Do Ensure Optimal Humidity and Temperature in Your Cellar

Your wine collection’s proper humidity and temperature are critical to maintaining the taste and smell of each bottle. Improper storage can lead to several issues, including:

             Mold growth

. If your wine cellar is too humid, the moisture will promote mold growth. The wine bottle is the ideal environment for mold to flourish. If the cellar is too humid, it will only encourage mold to take over.

             Oxidation

. Wine stored on its side helps keep the cork that is inside the bottle moist. Humidity keeps the cork that isn't moistened by the wine from shrinking. If your wine cellar isn't humid enough, the cork will dry out.

             Premature aging

. When wine is stored at the optimal temperature, it is allowed to age and mature properly. If you store your wine at higher than optimal temperatures, it will age too quickly, which will negatively impact the aroma and taste of the bottle.

The ideal temperature for wine is anywhere between 50 degrees and 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Store your wine at a relative humidity around 70 percent. Improper lighting can also impact your wine. LED lights are ideal because they emit very little heat and will not impact the temperature in your wine cellar.

Don't Forget to Clean Your Wine Cellar

Your wine cellar provides the optimal conditions for your collection. The temperature and humidity in the cellar are critical, but the cleanliness of the cellar is just as important. A cleaning session two or three times a year will help protect the bottles, and what is found inside each. Here are a few simple tips to help keep your wine cellar clean:

Remove each bottle from the rack and dust the bottle and the wood or metal

. This task might seem laborious, but eliminating dust will help protect the wine label from damage.

Examine the bottles for signs of mold growth

. If you notice any discolorations, wipe down the bottle with a damp rag and check to ensure the temperature and humidity in the cellar.

Have wine barrels cleaned by a professional

. Wine barrels must be cleaned with specialized equipment and chemicals that are best handled by a professional.

Since your air conditioner has been sitting dormant this winter, it probably has accumulated some dust, dirt, and other filth these past few months. That is why your air conditioner will need a good cleaning before you turn it on again.

One area that becomes particularly dirty on most central air conditioning units is the condenser coil. The condenser coil is the visible component located on the outer sides of the exterior unit that is lined with thin, metal fins.

The good news is that most homeowners can easily clean the condenser coils on their own air conditioning systems. Cleaning requires minimal materials and just about an hour of your time. Below is more information about the condenser coil and what you need to know about cleaning it.

The Purpose of Air Conditioning Coils

While your focus will be on cleaning the condenser coil, there are actually two types of coils inside your air conditioning system. The other kind of coil found in your system is the evaporator coil. Together, the evaporator coil and condenser coil are key components in making cooling possible.

The evaporator coil lies inside your home in the air handler, which is where the system blower forces air through the vents. The sole function of the evaporator coil is to cool passing air by absorbing its heat content. This captured heat is transferred via the refrigerant to the outside unit.

At this point, the condenser coil comes into play as refrigerant inside the condenser coil releases its heat content into the atmosphere. The refrigerant is then pumped back into the house by the compressor, where it circulates through the evaporator coil and the cycle repeats itself again and again.

As you might imagine, the heat transfer process can be inhibited if either the evaporator or condenser coils become dirty. Both coils rely upon efficient, fast heat transfer through thin metal tubing, and it doesn't take much in the way of debris to coat and insulate the tubing. Too much debris can cause the air conditioner to work much harder than necessary and cause your electric bills to rise accordingly.

How to Clean a Condenser Coil

Your wine collection’s proper humidity and temperature are critical to maintaining the taste and smell of each bottle. Improper storage can lead to several issues, including:

          1.

           Disconnect electrical power

Before you begin cleaning the condenser coil, disconnect all electrical power to the outdoor unit. This will prevent possible damage and, more importantly, keep you safe from a potential electrical shock. Most central air conditioning systems utilize 240 volts of electricity, which can prove deadly if contact is accidentally made.

          2.

           Remove loose debris

After you have disconnected the electrical power to the outdoor unit, begin the actual cleaning process by sweeping or vacuuming loose debris away from the condenser coil. Work cautiously, as you don't want to risk damaging the delicate fins, and you will still have a chance to remove any remaining debris once you finish this first step.

          3.

           Wash the condenser coil

Once the bulk of loose material has been removed from the condenser coil, you're ready to wash the remainder of the debris away with cleaning solution and water. Spray the exposed condenser coil fins with a coil cleaning solution until the coil is dripping wet. You can buy the cleaning solution premixed, and it is also available in concentrate form for mixing on your own.

          4.

           Rinse the condenser coil

After allowing the coil to soak in the cleaning solution for the recommended amount of time specified by the manufacturer of the solution, rinse off the coil with a garden hose. Do not use a jet spray setting, as you will bend the cooling fins. Instead allow the water to flow gently over the coil until all of the solution has been washed away.

Winter is just around the corner, and if you have not turned your heat on already, you'll be doing so soon. This is a common time of year for furnace troubles to appear. As a furnace sits unused all summer, corrosion can accelerate, and changes in temperature can also cause certain components to crack.

Sometimes the first sign that something is amiss with your furnace is a certain smell, but not all odors are troublesome. Read on to discover common furnace odors and what each one indicates.

            Dusty Smells

If you notice a dusty scent when you turn on your furnace — a scent similar to what you smell when you step into a storage room or an attic — do not worry. This is a common smell for when you first turn your heat on for the year. As the furnace sits unused, dust accumulates on the internal components.

Additionally, if you have not used your air conditioning in a few weeks or months, then there may also be dust in your air ducts, which gets blown out around the home when you turn the heat on.

The dusty smell should dissipate in a day or two. Dust and vacuum your home and change the air filter after the furnace has been on for a few days — this gets rid of the dust that was displaced.

            Smoky Smells

A faint smoky odor with no actual smoke present may just indicate that dust has accumulated on the furnace burner. If the smoky odor is strong, you actually see smoke, or the smoke alarm goes off, then you have a more serious issue. Turn the furnace off immediately.

If the smoke is thin, you may enter the basement with caution to open windows and ventilate the space. Call your HVAC contractor to come look over the furnace.

If the smoke is thick and you have any suspicion of an actual fire, call your local fire department to come investigate and wait outside the home until they arrive. Your furnace's vent pipe or chimney may be blocked, or there may be a plastic or rubber component that has caught fire.

            Rotten Egg Odors

This is perhaps the worst smell you can detect coming from your furnace. Natural gas is naturally odorless, but the gas companies add sulfur to give it a distinct odor. If you smell that sulfurous rotten egg smell, then you have a gas leak, which can be incredibly dangerous because airborne gas can combust and cause an explosion.

If you know where your home's main gas valve is and can access it quickly, then turn it off and leave the home. If you cannot easily access the gas valve, turn off the furnace and leave the home. Call the fire department — they will examine the situation and let you know when it's safe to go back inside.

When your home is deemed safe, call your HVAC company, and do not turn the heat back on until they have examined and repaired your equipment. They may have to collaborate with your gas company — depending on the exact problem at hand.

            Chemical Odors

If you smell an odor that reminds you of preservatives and embalming fluid, chances are you have a cracked heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is a component that transfers heat from your furnace's burner to the air. If it cracks, then carbon monoxide can leak into the air. This is a dangerous situation, and cracked heat exchangers claim multiple lives each year in the U.S.

If your carbon monoxide detector is ringing and you have symptoms like headaches, nausea, and confusion, then head to the emergency room or urgent care center. Turn off your furnace and contact an HVAC professional. They may recommend replacing your heat exchanger or replacing the entire furnace — depending on its age and the extent of the damage.

Dusty odors at the beginning of the heating season are nothing to worry about, but strong smoky odors, the scent of rotten eggs, and chemical odors all suggest something is seriously wrong with your furnace.

Comparing Ductless Mini Split and Central Air Conditioning Units

There are many different types of home cooling systems, all of which work in different ways to perform the same function: namely, to keep the interior of your home at a comfortable temperature. Two of the most common types of air conditioners are ductless mini split units and central units.

Both types of air conditioners work in distinct ways, and as such have different sets of advantages and drawbacks associated with them. Understanding what each type of air conditioner has to offer can help you choose the best type of air conditioner for your home.

            Central Air Conditioners

Central air conditioners make use of ductwork that is installed throughout your home to move chilled air to different rooms. This allows a central air conditioner to provide whole house cooling.

A key advantage of central air conditioners is the fact that they take up little room in your living space. They are made out of two large units, one of which is installed outside of your home, and the other which can be put in your basement. This means that the only visible part of your air conditioning system is the vents.

Another advantage of central air conditioners is the fact that they will pass all of the air in your home through a filter installed in the unit, which can help improve air quality by removing allergens from the air supply.

However, central air conditioners can be expensive to install, with unit costs depending on the size of your home (as larger units are necessary to cool a larger area, which means higher upfront costs).

Further, the ductwork used to transport air throughout your home can leak air into the space behind your walls, ruining the efficiency of your air conditioner and raising your energy bills. In addition, dust and other debris can clog up your ductwork, reducing airflow and requiring cleaning and maintenance to fix.

            Ductless Mini Split Air Conditioners

Ductless mini split air conditioners, on the other hand, make use of several smaller air conditioning units installed throughout your home. Rather than using ducts to transport cold air, they simply use a fan to distribute cold air in the room they are installed in.

The main advantage of using ductless mini split systems is the fact that you can customize each room's temperature, allowing you to not cool rooms you aren't using, thus increasing your energy savings.

It's also important to note that ductless mini split air conditioners are easier and cheaper to install than central air conditioning systems, as you won't need to install ductwork and vents in the walls and ceiling of your home.

Further, since ductless air conditioners only have to use a single small fan to move air around a single room, they are much less noisy than are central air conditioners, which make use of large fans and blowers to move chilled air through ducts.

However, ductless mini splits do have some downsides. Most notably, they do not have the same air filtration qualities associated with central air conditioning units, which can be a concern for homeowners with allergies or respiratory conditions.

In addition, ductless mini split air conditioners are much more visible in the room they are installed in, since they are standalone units that sit on the wall. This can disrupt the aesthetic of your interior design.

Four Signs Your AC System May Need Professional Repair

Whether you're a homeowner with a residential AC system on the fritz or if your commercial system has failed, AC failure is uncomfortable and frustrating. AC failure can even hazardous to health and safety during the summer months. Here are some signs that your malfunctioning system may need professional help.

          Your Unit Doesn't Cool Efficiently

A dirty unit, or one with low air flow, is less efficient than a well-kept unit. So if you've noticed your AC system's efficiency gradually decreasing over time, it's a good idea to try some home maintenance before calling for professional repairs. First, try replacing the air filters at each intake vent; if these are clogged, they can lower the amount of air that reaches the unit.

Then check around the outdoor unit itself to make sure all vegetation is at least a couple of feet away from the unit on all sides. Clear away any undergrowth, bushes, or weeds that have grown up around or near the unit. Lastly, check to make sure that dead leaves and other debris haven't fallen inside the unit or landed on its cover.

Once you've performed these maintenance steps, wait a while to see if your AC system's efficiency and effectiveness improve. If not, you could have low coolant levels, a problem which requires professional help.

          Your Unit Stops Running

If your unit won't run at all, there could be a simple power connection problem or a larger problem with the compressor or some other critical component of the system. Before you call a professional, check the circuit breaker and the emergency switch as well as the unit's main on/off switch. You can also try performing a reset.

If these checks don't solve the issue, it's probably a real problem. You could be looking at a problem such as electrical failure, or even a total compressor failure. Both of these problems will need to be addressed by a trained professional.

Your Unit Has Ice on its Coils

If you observe that your AC unit's coil is iced up, you may or may not need a professional repair. What you certainly do need to do is turn the system off, then run just the fan (without the cooling component) to help the unit recover.

Next, check to see if there's an obvious reason for the ice. Some factors that can contribute to a unit icing over include:

            Overuse

            Incorrect sizing

            Reduced or blocked airflow

            Low coolant levels

If there's an airflow problem, you can simply wait for the unit to thaw, fix the airflow problem, then use the system as usual and keep an eye on it to see if it ices up again. If it does, you may wish to call in a technician for a coolant refill.

Your Unit Blows Warm Air Instead of Cold

If your AC unit is still blowing air, you know that it hasn't had a complete motor failure. But that probably doesn't make you feel better about being overheated especially when the AC is blowing warm or hot air.

Blowing warm or hot air can be just a form of the decreased efficiency mentioned above. So it's a good idea to check filters and air flow before calling for help. However, if it starts blowing warm air suddenly, that's more likely to be an acute problem as opposed to the chronic one mentioned above.

One easily corrected problem is if your system's settings are simply messed up. It's all too easy with some systems to accidentally bump the "heat" setting to the "on" position, which would explain the outflow of warm air.

As you bask in the gloriously cool environs of your home or business, your air conditioning system is likely working overtime to make your surroundings comfortable. The intense heat and humidity that's often a part of the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, summertime experience create a hefty workload for your air conditioner, which could add extra wear and tear on your system's various components.

can also consume more electricity than expected, leading to higher utility bills. To keep this from happening, you can put your ceiling fans to good use.

Running your ceiling fans in a counter-clockwise direction can help tremendously when it comes to reducing your air conditioning burden. The downward draft generated by your ceiling fan prevents cool air from rising, resulting in fewer natural losses of conditioned air. The air movement also creates a wind chill effect that leaves you feeling cooler without actually reducing thermostat temperatures.

By using your ceiling fans, you can raise your thermostat temperatures several degrees without experiencing any noticeable loss in cooling comfort. This can help you ease the strain on your AC system while saving money in the process.

         Importance of Ice Machine Maintenance

With summer just around the corner, your ice machine is about to start working at maximum capacity again. With that in mind, it’s also time to make sure that your ice machine is cleaned, maintained and ready for frequent use. Did you know that contaminated ice is a health issue that is included on sanitation reports by the Health Department? Ice machines are usually the least cared for food machines in a commercial setting. Here are some of the main reasons why it’s important to perform frequent maintenance on your commercial ice machine.

Equipment Ice Machines are Considered Food

Since people consume ice in their food, ice machines are considered food equipment. As such, they require the same sanitation standards as any other food equipment. You can reduce ice contamination and foodborne disease by frequently cleaning machines to manufacturer standards. Most of the time, this equates to 2 to 4 cleanings a year. If you use the machine quite often, you may want to clean it even more regularly than that.

Bacteria Can Grow in Ice Machines

In order to avoid bacterial diseases, ice should be stored and handled like food. Also, if your commercial ice machine lacks a good water filtration system, you could see microbial growth and slime-forming bacteria. Last of all, if your ice machine is near a cooking line or in a restaurant, you are even more vulnerable to bacterial growth and you should consider more frequent cleanings.

You want to make sure you can always properly cool down or heat up your home. In recent years, many homeowners have discovered the advantages of getting a

           installed.

Better to Warm Up Individual Rooms

Mini split units can be adjusted to either heat up a large space or an individual room. If there is a certain area of your home that constantly feels cold, then a mini split system can be the way to go. This is a clear advantage over standard systems, which heat up an entire building.

          More Flexible

If you want to make additions to a standard unit, then you only have a certain amount of space to work with. Due to their smaller size, mini split units are easier to customize. You can put them practically anywhere in your house.

          Better Energy Efficiency

Mini split systems are the way to go if you are interested in doing your part for the planet. The reason why they use less energy is because they are not reliant on ducts for distributing air. That means you get more air with less power.

It is fairly simple to install a mini split HVAC system, so look into getting one for your home before next winter comes around. For more details about this device and similar ones, call Eagle Refrigeration & Mechanical, LLC.

The Importance of Furnace Maintenance Before Winter

Homes and businesses rely on a furnace all year long, but more so during the cold winter months. A furnace that gets you through winter is better than one that doesn't which is why a licensed HVAC professional should perform a maintenance check on your unit before the deep cold sets in. Here are some of the top benefits of this check.

          1. Reduced Energy Costs

When your furnace is running at peak condition, it uses less energy. Small adjustments and minor part replacements can ensure you don't pay more than necessary to heat your home or business.

          2. Fewer Break Downs

A system failure is more likely when your

            furnace

hasn't had a thorough check and cleaning. Regular use can wear down certain furnace components and that becomes more apparent when you need your furnace the most.

          3. Increased Furnace Longevity

A clean furnace can last longer than one left unchecked for too long. If you compare the cost of replacing your furnace with regular maintenance checks, it's easy to see that you save money when your furnace is properly maintained.

Stay warm in your home or business this winter by having your furnace checked by a licensed HVAC professional. You can save money on your energy bills and on future maintenance with this easy appointment. Call Eagle Refrigeration & Mechanical, LLC to have your maintenance today.

          Differing Temperatures

When you set your freezer’s temperature, it should maintain a consistent level. When it breaks, the temperature is going to vary. If the coldness of your freezer differs from one day to the next and you have not changed it, then there could be an issue with the sensor.

Your freezer needs to be cold, but if frost or ice is building up, then something has gone wrong. Your freezer is not cooling down the correct way. This is also true for water that appears unexpectedly on the floor. There might be a leak somewhere in your cooler.

          Strange Smells

Unpleasant odors emitted from your freezer are often a result of coolant leaking. Leaks are typically a sign that a freezer has gotten too old, so it may be time to upgrade.

Have routine maintenance done on your freezer from time to time to ensure every component is working optimally. Call Eagle Refrigeration & Mechanical, LLC as soon as your freezer is in need of repairs.

Reasons Wine Enthusiasts Should Purchase a Wine Cellar

Like most adults, you probably enjoy a nice glass of wine every so often. However, if you are a true enthusiast, then you should really consider buying an actual wine cellar to house all your drinks. This purchase can come in handy in more ways than one.

          Convenient

Instead of only having the space for a couple bottles of wine, you can have a rather large collection. This allows you to pick the perfect one for any occasion rather than resorting to whatever you have or making a trip to the store.

          Added Resale Value

If you are planning to sell your house sometime in the near future, then adding a wine cellar can be a great investment. It can add quite a bit of resale value, and if other wine enthusiasts see that you already have a cellar in place, then they may be more likely to make an offer.

          Perfect Temperature and Humidity

Instead of having wines that are not the proper temperature, you can always have wines the temperature they are meant to be served.
